Allergies In The Spring
I live in the mountains of Blue Ridge Summit Pennsylvania. Having Graves’ Disease is a challenge for managing the seasons. A major symptom of the disease is a sensitivity to hot and cold environments. The diagnosis happens in March of 2015, so approaching the spring enables some time for making serious adjustments to my surroundings. In the beginning, a shock and new awakening for me is taking a hot bath, which I love to do every morning. Yes, I am a bath person, and this is important to me for beginning my day. Of course, I want the water hot, and the issue is losing feeling in my hands and feet. This is enough of a sensation to throw me off-balance when trying to stand and reach for a towel. Balance is very important because I also struggle with dizziness. Some of this is due to medications. However, the spring season is where I begin the journey of learning new coping skills. The temperatures are within reason but the bathtub, and hot water scenario takes some adjustment. I am beginning my day now and must make the transformation from home temperatures to the outside environment. Allergies surround me here in the mountains. I must plan ahead because staying healthy is important for one’s immune system.
Humidity In The Summer
Spring is now over, and the summer begins. Of course in Pennsylvania, there is no way of knowing if summers will be mild or extremely humid. One word of advice, if temperatures and humidity are high with a heat advisory in effect, go ahead with caution when you leave your home. This is an intense struggle for me because it is one thing to go out your door and get into your vehicle with air conditioning. However, once you leave your vehicle and are susceptible to hot conditions, dizziness can occur. This can lead to heart palpitations and body tremors. I try to manage time wisely because rushing will only make things worse. Some people are not accustomed to air conditioning and rely on fans for cooling. Focus on the surroundings and create a support system for yourself if you feel you are in danger. Another secret is to make sure you take sunglasses with you. If I walk out the door or get out of my vehicle, and the sun hits my eyes, I will become extremely light-headed. Sunglasses make a world of difference when making this adjustment!
Fall Time With Family And Friends
Fall is my favorite time of the year. I simply adore sweaters and the spiritual color the season offers. This is my time to spend with family and friends but dressing proper is important. I have to say though, this is my easy season. I find a secure balance between my inside home environment with the outside environment. There is still no need for the heat yet, and no need for air conditioning in my vehicle. I can control my surroundings with the clothing I wear while enjoying fresh air and scenery. Staying in a routine is important. I can fill my days with many projects, creating stability and managing stress, which is very good for the soul. Honestly, I must say, I am alive during the fall! It’s a must though to pay attention to the sunlight. So make sure those glasses are close by when managing the seasons!
Meditating In The Winter
Now winter is a completely different story. Again, it is difficult to predict a harsh or mild winter. In the mountains, it feels like every winter is harsh for me. The cold and wind will cause my heart to race and skip beats. If I push my self too hard, my hands will shake and eventually, body tremors will occur. The beauty of snow is amazing. How can so much whiteness fall from the sky? However, for me, this is a disaster in managing a lifestyle that I have no control over. I cannot handle the outside cold environment for long periods of time. The fear of driving consumes me during the winter, and I find myself staying home and avoiding people. I try to make this my meditating time of the year while working on home projects. For those who suffer from any autoimmune disorder, it is important to manage your seasons and create a support system that works for you. Find beauty within yourself, and each season will bring hope for the days that lie ahead when managing the seasons!
