Most of us understand that the body will store fat cells. I personally did not realize there are different types of fat cells in humans. We have white fat cells and brown fat cells. Interestingly enough, we search for ways to burn fat, depending on personal lifestyles and health conditions.
The location of white fat cells is around our organs and underneath the skin. Here we go, my friends! My first thought is that stubborn belly fat that makes me feel like I am pregnant. Now I have more types of fat to worry about.
White fat cells store calories and can increase the risk for metabolic disorders if we have too many. One example of a metabolic disorder is diabetes. I have to laugh, even though it really is not funny, that my doctor will say, “I am extremely obese!” My belly is a tough area since I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease.
Moving on to another type of fat cell. Brown fat cells burn energy, create heat, and maintain body temperature. I was watching a video describing how infants are born with a higher percentage of brown fat cells. As we get older, the percentage decreases. So, how can the body retrieve more brown fat cells?
What if I throw another curve ball to our discussion about types of fat cells? Researchers have identified another type of fat cell, known as beige fat cells. Specific triggers, such as cold, can convert white fat cells into beige cells. The beige cells are also known as brite cells.
So, if white fat cells store calories and beige or brown fat cells burn calories, how can we improve our health? What can we do to increase or turn white fat cells into beige fat cells? Going one step higher here, is there a way to gain more brown fat cells?
If cold temperatures can trigger fat cells, it seems to me this is something for all of us struggling with weight problems to think about. Having Graves’ Disease poses a problem for me. I have a sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.
However, I have to admit, I feel rejuvenated after activities involving colder temperatures. I was working at a ski resort when I first moved from my hometown, and everyone would tell me how healthy I looked. My weight was normal, I was so energetic, and my mind was clear. No brain fog for me.
Now, my life is so different. However, since brown fat is boosted in cold temperatures, taking walks in cooler weather can help. Another approach is maintaining house temperatures below 66 degrees. The main point here my friends are to turn the heat down!
According to research, spending two hours a day, in cooler temperatures, can help to change fat cells. Personally, I am not sure I am ready to take those cold showers but keeping my home on the cooler side and walking in the mornings, just might be a game-changer!
Please make sure you always communicate with your doctor as you move forward in your thyroid journey. Types of fat cells are worth reading about because sometimes the simple things in life are just what the doctor orders!
